An Abundant Harvest

This year's journey started on May 21, when a bunch of us gathered on a very wet day to plant 24 pounds of seed potatoes in a single 150 foot row. That day did not foreshadow the drought we experienced throughout the summer, and we all worried that this crop might suffer from the dry spell that hurt many crops in our area.

In spite of the harsh conditions, with a dedicated crew of volunteers mounding the rows, weeding the weeds and picking off the potato bugs (yuck!) throughout the summer, the potatoes grew abundantly.

On September 20th, a beautiful fall day, a large group converged on Chamberlin's farm to harvest over 600 pounds of potatoes! This amount far exceeded anyone's expectations.

All of these spuds were shared with several local food shelves, food pantries, family programs and mutual aid groups in the area. The efforts of all the volunteers, especially the kids, are so much appreciated.

This kind of work connects our hands with the soil and our hearts with our neighbors.  Most importantly it connects families with nutrition during a hard time of food insecurity.

Thanks again to the Chamberlins for sharing the space and their amazingly fertile soil!
